Drox, aka An(dr)ew F(ox)ton, a rapper/DJ from the world-famous nightclub scene in Newcastle has never been known to wear a shirt until the temperature drops below zero, and then only with a severe windchill factor. Forced south by events that remain murky, he has scored – as in-house producer at up and coming label Helicopta – 4 consecutive Music Week Urban top tens (Inc “Mercy”) over the last few months. A remix package of Retro Garage and House cuts went to DJs via Soulfood Music last week and is set to go top five next week.
The collaboration with Lagos-based Rapper/Model Eva Alordiah, which will hopefully begin a long term relationship between Helicopta and Lagos, came about after a visit by Helicopta’s Chris Sergeant to Lagos to check out the fast growing music scene in the city.
Eva is the most successful female rapper in Nigeria and has a string of awards to her name (see below). Known for her biting and very personal lyrics, she definitely doesn’t hold back on “Mercy” which sees her pushing back at some of the frustrations in her life.
She has now put what turned out to be a difficult relationship with her previous Label/Management company firmly behind her and is hoping to work more in the UK and the US. Unusually for a rapper, she also has a very soulful singing voice, and has headlined several successful tours in Nigeria.
Mercy is riding high in clubland and the video is available on Vevo.com.
